Who I am
Elaine Hamelin-Mitchell: Art, Research, and Strategy in the Service of Rewilding the Human System
I am a visionary Canadian artist and researcher whose practice is driven by the belief that the natural world holds the blueprint for solving complex human problems. My comprehensive mission is encapsulated in my signature philosophy: Rewilding the Human System. My unique ability lies in translating the inherent wisdom of ecological systems into unique works of art and ways of living.
My diverse artistic practice is a direct exploration of my connection to nature. I have explored this connection in many parts of the world, from the varied and temperate climates of Europe, the arid and tropical climates of Australia, the humid climates of Japan, and the continental climate of Eastern Ontario-Western Québec, Canada.
My portfolio spans a variety of mediums, including oil painting, watercolour, drawing, nature photography, and mixed media. My visual art often focuses on the clandestine beauty and biodiversity of the forest floor, from the awe-inspiring landscapes to the tiny, intricate structures studied through mycology (fungi) and botany.
I also extend my art into the digital realm with Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs). Crucially, all my digital assets are minted using ecologically safer blockchain options, ensuring my digital practice aligns with my commitment to environmental stewardship. A recent NFT launch was dedicated to fundraising for wildfire relief, directly connecting digital art value to tangible ecological support.
Furthermore, my research extends into practical sustainability through rewilding the human diet. This involves intensive study, sustainable foraging, and mindful cultivation of wild foods. This practice is approached with deep reverence for the land and is an investigation into how reconnecting with seasonal and wild nourishment can restore foundational health and ecological awareness to our daily lives.
I invite art collectors, sustainability researchers, rewilders, and those interested in nature-inspired design to engage with my work. Explore my mixed-media art and ecological research aimed at integrating the resilience and wisdom of nature into every facet of the human experience.
I am also a proud and active member of the Prescott-Russell Arts Council and Arts Ottawa.
